How To Join

The Mississippi Bar has 19 Sections, which are open to any Bar member in good standing. To learn more about how you can be involved in Sections, email eventsandprograms@msbar.org or call 601-355-9226. In addition, most Sections have an electronic mailing list, some of which are on-going discussions about certain areas of practice. To know more about these lists or how you can be subscribed, email eventsandprograms@msbar.org.

Want to join a Section?

Sections of The Mississippi Bar are separate groups having special interests in particular substantive areas of practice. Sections function under Bylaws approved by the Board of Commissioners of The Mississippi Bar and broad policy guidelines also established by the Board of Commissioners.

“The Commissioners may create a Section of the Bar at any time. Each Section may adopt, amend and repeal Bylaws by a vote of 2/3 of its members present at any meeting thereof. The Bylaws of any Section shall not be in conflict with these Bylaws. The initial Bylaws of the Section shall conform to Model Bylaws approved by the Board of Commissioners, and no amendment thereto shall be affected without approval of the Board of Commissioners.” (Bylaws of The Mississippi Bar, Article 8).

Membership in all Sections is open to any Bar member in good standing upon payment of the prescribed Section dues. As voluntary, non-appointed groups, Sections elect their own officers and choose their own activities with the limitations established by the Bylaws of the Bar and the Section, as well as general policies established by the Board of Commissioners and the Section Executive Committees.

Sections provide the structure through which all members of the Bar have the opportunity to participate in its work. Sections may be divided into smaller units. For example, committees of Sections may be appointed to undertake particular assignments such as membership, newsletter, legislation, annual meeting program, etc., or practice areas may be further divided within Sections by the establishment of committees. The Executive Committee of each Section should serve to govern and coordinate the work of the Section committees rather than attempt to undertake all Section work.

The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section serves to address all aspects of the practice of Alternative Dispute Resolution. This section’s goal is to prepare its members for the law profession of the future in which multiple dispute resolution options will become an integral part of every attorney’s practice. The section provides information and technical assistance to its members, legislators, government departments and the general public on all aspects of dispute resolution. This section will study existing methods for the prompt and effective resolution of disputes; adapt current legal procedures to accommodate court-annexed and court-directed dispute resolution processes; strive to activate local bar involvement in dispute resolution and conduct public and professional education programs.

The ADR Section of The Mississippi Bar has created a list of ADR Section members who are qualified, practicing arbitrators in Mississippi. This list, similar to the list of qualified mediators currently maintained by the Bar in connection with the Court Annexed Mediation Program, is designed to assist the public and the bar in locating persons qualified to serve as arbitrators.

Title Examination Standards are guidelines intended to assist land title attorneys called upon to assess the marketability of land titles, focusing on the manner in which a prudent examiner approaches matters that may be encountered during the course of an examination. The Title Examination Standards address a variety of concerns, including the attitudes and relationships among examiners and between examiners and the public, the appropriate duration of a title search, the effect of the lapse of time on a defective or improperly recorded title document, the appropriate presumptions of fact that can be relied upon in the course of an examination, and the law applicable to commonly encountered situations.

The primary purpose of the Women in the Profession Section is to identify areas impacting women in the law and provide resources and education to maintain women lawyer membership within the Bar. To achieve this primary purpose, the Section has identified three key areas of focus: The current status of women in the legal profession; Barriers that prevent women attorneys from full participation in the work, responsibilities and rewards of the profession, including problems encountered by women attorneys in pursuing their professional careers; and Quality of life issues in the profession that affect both male and female attorneys. For each of these areas, the Section will provide education to its members (male and female) through continued legal education, publications and other initiatives. The Section will provide a network of members within all practice areas, will promote diversity and inclusion within the Bar, will foster future leaders within the profession, and will foster a mentoring relationship with the state’s two law schools.

The Workers’ Compensation Section helps its members keep abreast of developments in this rapidly growing area of legal practice via a section members only list serve. The Section is composed of attorneys who practice in the areas of unemployment compensation, social security, and workers’ compensation. This Section strives to keep its members informed on current developments through publications and continuing legal education seminars.
Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund

The Kids’ Chance Mediation Project was established by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Mississippi Bar in 2002. Its purpose is to fund and award scholarships for children whose parents were seriously or fatally injured on the job. Lessening the financial burden of secondary education on families who have lost a breadwinner is vital because higher education is expensive and the need is great. Injured workers’ weekly wage loss benefits are limited in amount to 2/3’s of the state’s average weekly wage and in duration to 450 weeks or about 8 1/2 years.

The Mediation Project is funded by Kids’ Chance Mediators who donate $50.00 of every hour of their mediation fees to the Kids’ Chance scholarship fund. The success of the Mediation Project is due to the generosity and selflessness of Kids’ Chance Mediators. All mediators are experienced workers’ compensation attorneys who represent both employers and employees and who are spread geographically across the state.

In 2023, the Kids’ Chance Mediation Project partnered with Kids’ Chance of Mississippi, Inc. so that the mission of the Mediation Project that began over twenty years ago will be amplified and enlarged to include the entire workers’ compensation community and to raise even more money for more deserving students.

Kids’ Chance of Mississippi Inc. is the state chapter of Kids’ Chance of America. Kids’ Chance of Mississippi Inc. was incorporated in 2022 and qualifies as a charitable organization under Internal Revenue Service Code Section 501(c)(3).
